The beginnings: The vision of an (1990 – 1995)
In 1990, Manuel Domínguez, with 20 years of experience behind him in the sector, decided to start out on his own and set up independently, laying the foundations for what would later become Dimefarma.
In 1992, he signed his own contract with Lifescan, a Johnson & Johnson company specialising in blood sugar level control systems. This agreement marked the start of his activity in the sector, supplying One Touch II and One Touch Basic meters, which are fundamental tools for persons with diabetes.
Three years later, in 1995, Peróxidos Farmacéuticos came on board as a supplier, introducing the Omron, the prestigious brand which is a leader in medical control and health care apparatus.
Growth and consolidation in the sector (1997 – 2002)
In 1997, Lifescan updated its technology with the launch of Glucotouch, strengthening the presence of innovative solutions on the Canarian market.
In 1998 Dimefarma won the contract to supply the Tenerife University Hospital (Hospital Universitario de Tenerife, HUC), ensuring the supply of meters and test strips for blood sugar level control in a reference centre.
In 2000, Manuel Domínguez, together with Isabel Santana, founded Dimefarma de Canarias S.L., thus regularising their activity as a consolidated company in medical and pharmaceutical supply.
Advance in blood sugar level control technology took its course and, in 2002, One Touch Ultra was introduced, causing a revolution in measurement since it reduced waiting times from 45 seconds to only 5 seconds, with a notable improvement in patient experience.
Adaptation and technological innovation (2017 – 2019)
2013 brought a change in the ISO regulation, making it compulsory to update the entire base of persons with diabetes with the new meters, to guarantee the fulfilment of standards for quality and accuracy.
That same year, a new generation of meters was launched. These devices are capable of measuring the results with an intuitive system of colours:
🔵 Blue for hypoglycemia (low readings)
🟢 Green for readings within objective
🔴 Red for hyperglycemia (high readings)
In 2017, evolution brought the launch of the digital ecosystem, One Touch Reveal, a diabetes management platform, designed to help people and health professionals monitor and analyse blood sugar levels more efficiently and in a more personalised manner, with the use of applications available on the web and mobile devices.
Two years later, in 2019, the One Touch Verio Reflect meter incorporated 21 languages, combining its colour systems with the introduction of emojis, making results interpretation easier for patients.
Drive in education and professional encounters (2021 – 2025)
In line with its commitment to training and ongoing knowledge review for health professionals, in 2021, Dimefarma organised the First Canarian Symposium for Diabetes Educators, a key event for training and knowledge exchange in the sector.
In 2025, we shall pass a new milestone with the fifth edition of this encounter, restating our commitment to education and innovation in the handling of diabetes in the Canary Islands.
